Today’s environmentally conscious market has led to an increased demand for reduced emissions and improved fuel efficiency. This shift has driven the development of new engine designs, consequently raising the bar for lubricant quality.

In recent years, car manufacturers have responded to stricter fuel economy regulations by developing smaller, higher-output engines. While these smaller engines contribute to reduced vehicle weight and enhanced fuel economy, they pose particular challenges for lubricants:

• Increased Heat: Smaller engines generate higher levels of heat, accelerating the rate of oil oxidation, nitration, and deposit formation. This process degrades the oil and promotes the formation of acids, leading to increased viscosity.

• Increased Pressure and Speed: The heightened pressure and speed of smaller engines make it more challenging for the oil to maintain a lubricating film that prevents metal-on-metal contact. This acceleration of valve train wear is a result of these conditions.

• Emission Control: Most of today’s petrol engines are equipped with three-way catalytic converters designed to reduce emissions of CO, NOx, and unburned carbon. These converters consist of a Reduction Catalyst that converts NOx into harmless Nitrogen, and an Oxidation Catalyst that burns CO and hydrocarbons. However, catalytic converters are vulnerable to SAPS (Sulfated Ash, Phosphorus, and Sulfur) found in engine oil detergents, anti-wear additives, and base oils.

API SN: the newest passenger car gasoline engine oil service category requiring improved oxidation resistance and deposit protection (which today’s smaller higher output engines demand), better wear protection for valve trains and reduced evaporative loss with less requirement for top up oil. API SN oils provide better low-temperature performance over the life of the oil, extended oil drain intervals in line with the engine manufacturers’ recommendations and extended life for catalytic converters.

ACEA A3/B4: Synplus 10W/50 SN meets the requirements of the Association of European Automobile Constructers (ACEA) A3/B4 grade which calls for stable, stay in grade oil for use in high performance gasoline and direct injection diesel engines and car or light van diesel engines. The A3/B4 oils may be used for extended drain intervals where specified by the engine manufacturer and/or as year round lower viscosity oils and/or for severe conditions as defined by the engine manufacturer.

ACEA C3: Synplus 10W/50 SN may also be used where oil meeting ACEA C3 is specified. ACEA C3 calls for stable stay-in-grade oils intended for use as a catalyst compatible lubricants in vehicles with Diesel Particulate Filters (DPF) and Three Way Catalysts (TWC) in high performance car and light van diesel and gasoline engines. These oils will help prolong the life of the DPF and TWC.

DaimlerChrysler MB229.51: Synplus 10W/50 SN can be used where MB229.51 is called for. The synthetic formulation meets the extended drain requirements of Mercedes Benz. Its lower volatility will reduce the evaporation of lighter oil fractions which would lead to oil thickening, contaminant concentration and increased oil consumption.
